The South Branch Berkeley Library in conjunction with the Berkeley-Palma Sister City Association presents three Wednesday nights of Cuba videos...
We will explore the sights, sounds, art, and culture of Cuba, as well as taking an historical look at U.S. policy with this magical island.
Wednesday May 5, 6:30-8:30 pm: “Rhythm and Smoke”
documents both Cuba’s cigar making and the island’s music from Afro-Cuban Folkloric to contemporary Latin Jazz.
Wednesday May 12, 6:30-8:30pm: “Free to Fly: the US-Cuba Link,”
the most recent work by award-winning filmmaker Estela Bravo, reflects the story of efforts to maintain links between the people of Cuba and the people of the U.S. in the face of 16 years of no direct travel. Discussion to follow.
Wednesday May 19, 6:30-8:30 pm: Video Presentation from Berkeley’s Sister-City, Palma Soriano
will feature artwork from Palma’s Haitian roots, Afro-Cuban dance, and excerpts from the Berkeley-Palma Soriano Sister City trips. Discussion to follow.
All events will be at the South Branch Library, 1901 Russell St., corner of M.L.King Jr. Way (1 block North of Ashby BART), in Berkeley.
